Week 7 - Designing Keyrings for 3d printing

Who would have thought that producing plastic products could be so easy. When I was young, toys are usually bought at stores, homemade toys are usually made out of paper or sticks and stuck together with glue or tape. Today, one can design our own plastic products and manufacture it in a compact factory in the comfort of our homes. This week, our class have made keyrings, it is our introduction to 3D printing.

Just like printing with paper, we first have to design what we print. It is much more complicated and take up more resources however, as we will not be using ink. Instead, plastic is molten to form the shape of what we want to print.

In week 7, we learnt how to use Fusion 360 to perform computer aided design and drafting. The pictures below are our individual designs for our key rings

During the lesson, with the aid and guidance of our lecturer, we created a shape using different functions such as the vertical/horizontal function and the concentric function.

As a group, we created a photo frame made of 4 different components, front plate, back plate, U-shaped photo holder and transparent face.

Activity 1: Penicilin

Antibiotic Broad Category: Healthcare Sub-Category: Pharmaceutical Chemical Product: Penicillin Application of chemical engineering principles in the production of chemical product: Firstly, Penicillium mold is required to produce penicillin. In mass production the mold will be placed in fermentation tanks ( fermentation ). In the tank, the penicillium mold will be added to a mixture added with sugar. As the mold grows and ferments, penicillin will be produced and dissolve in nutrient broth(initially water and sugar). The nutrient broth will then be filtrated ( filtration ) and mixed with an acid. The broth-acid mixture will then be added into a solvent (butyl acetate) in order to carry out the liquid-liquid extraction of the penicillin. Penicillin will then be obtained by means of evaporation. citation: Dayalan, S. A., Darwin, P., & Prakash, S. (2011). Comparative study on production, purification of penicillin by Penicillium chrysogenum isolated from soil and citrus sample...
