Week 14

 Sketches and specification

This week we learnt how to sketch! Along with uses and purpose of sketches, we learnt about one and two point perspective drawing.

Design drawings:

  • Key technique for creative expression

  • Principal approach which product designers externalise a product’s design concepts

  • Enhances understanding and provide visual clues for possible further refinement and revisions of the product

One-point perspective drawing

  • One vanishing point in the middle

  • All diagonal lines converge with the vanishing point

Two-point perspective drawing

  • Two vanishing point at the left and right

Design specifications:

  • Set of documented requirements to be satisfied by a product etc.

  • Provides information product teams need to to build out new features/functionality of  a product.

Activity 1: Penicilin

Antibiotic Broad Category: Healthcare Sub-Category: Pharmaceutical Chemical Product: Penicillin Application of chemical engineering principles in the production of chemical product: Firstly, Penicillium mold is required to produce penicillin. In mass production the mold will be placed in fermentation tanks ( fermentation ). In the tank, the penicillium mold will be added to a mixture added with sugar. As the mold grows and ferments, penicillin will be produced and dissolve in nutrient broth(initially water and sugar). The nutrient broth will then be filtrated ( filtration ) and mixed with an acid. The broth-acid mixture will then be added into a solvent (butyl acetate) in order to carry out the liquid-liquid extraction of the penicillin. Penicillin will then be obtained by means of evaporation. citation: Dayalan, S. A., Darwin, P., & Prakash, S. (2011). Comparative study on production, purification of penicillin by Penicillium chrysogenum isolated from soil and citrus sample...
